Freeport on Deanes' list
DORMONT — Seton-La Salle running back Lionel Deanes probably wishes every game he plays could be against Freeport.
After rushing for 288 yards against the Yellowjackets just three weeks ago, Deanes torched Freeport for 293 yards Friday, this time in the WPIAL 3A quarterfinals, to help the Rebels record a 35-18 victory at Dormont Stadium.
The 293 yards was a season high for Deanes, as he eclipsed the 2,000-yard mark for the season as well as the 5,000-yard mark for his career.
“He's a great back,” Freeport head coach John Gaillot said. “He has a low center of gravity and he's hard to bring down. He'll be playing somewhere at the next level.
The Yellowjackets defense started off strong, as they tackled Deanes in the end zone for a safety on the Rebels' first offensive play to give Freeport (7-3) an early 2-0 lead, but it was all Deanes after that.
After a fumble on Freeport's first offensive play after the safety gave the ball right back to Seton-La Salle, Deanes had runs of 40 and 17, the latter of which was Deanes' first touchdown of the game, which put the Rebels in front for good 7-2.
Deanes would score again later in the first quarter from 5 yards out, and the rout was on. Besides his 293 rushing yards, Deanes found the end zone five times to account for all the Rebels' scores.
Freeport's offense was held in check until the fourth quarter when Jake Sarver threw two touchdown passes, one to Luke Kennedy and one to Evan McCrea.
Sarver, who played the majority of the game at quarterback, threw for 161 yards. While regular quarterback Austin Romanchak caught six passes for 136 yards.
“We wanted to get Austin in space and create a mismatch on the outside,” Gaillot said. “When we had trouble running the ball, we decided to make the switch.”
Conor Selinger led the Yellowjackets with 45 yards on the ground.
“I told the kids after the game how proud I am of them,” Gaillot said. “They battled all year and won some games that they shouldn't have. The senior leadership went above and beyond this year. I will never forget this team.
