Police find gun, drugs in home

Owner jailed on felony charges

A 40-year-old felon and suspected drug dealer remains jailed after his probation officers caught him with a loaded rifle and numerous bags of heroin and cocaine in Butler, authorities said.

The officers were making a house check at Richard L. Jones’ home on Oak Street about 9:15 a.m. Friday when they turned up the alleged contraband.

A Remington 12-gauge shotgun loaded with three shells was found in a living room corner. Next to the gun was a black container, Butler police said in charging documents.

In the container were 51 stamp bags of suspected heroin and two bags of suspected cocaine. Additionally, authorities seized two Suboxone strips, two clonazepam pills and drug packaging materials from the container.

The probation officers searched Jones, who is unemployed, and found him carrying $2,700 in currency.

The defendant admitted that he owned all the items that the officers found, investigators said.

Police later combed Jones’ criminal record and learned he has a prior conviction for aggravated assault. Under state law, that felony conviction prohibits the defendant from possessing firearms.

District Judge Pete Shaffer arraigned Jones on charges of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a firearm, both felonies.

He also faces misdemeanor charges of possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. A preliminary hearing is set for 10:30 a.m. Oct. 20.

Jones is in the Butler County Prison on $100,000 bail.
