Cleaner-burning engines now in useIMPERIAL — Consol Energy has begun using new, cleaner-burning engines to run its hydraulic fracturing pumps at natural gas well sites on Pittsburgh International Airport property.The company says the diesel engines are supposed to cut harmful emissions by 36 percent.They’re developed jointly by Cummins, which makes engines and fuel systems, and Halliburton, the oil field services company.Consol’s chief operations officer of exploration and production, Tim Dugan, says the airport drilling sites are the company’s “flagship project.” The cleaner engines are being used on a six-well drilling site on the 9,000-acre airport site.

Jury awards $150M in Jeep fire deathNEW YORK — A jury in Georgia has awarded $150 million to the family of a 4-year-old boy killed when a Jeep Grand Cherokee exploded into flames after being rear-ended three years ago. The jury said Chrysler, the maker of Jeeps, must pay nearly the full amount.Jurors in Decatur County ruled Thursday Chrysler acted with reckless disregard for human life in selling the family of Remington “Remi” Walden a 1999 Jeep with a gas tank mounted behind the rear axle.Walden of Bainbridge, Ga., was killed when the Jeep driven by his aunt was hit from behind by a pickup truck in March 2012. The fuel tank leaked, engulfing the Jeep in flames and killing the boy.The verdict comes nearly two years after Chrysler compromised with a federal safety agency and agreed to a scaled-down recall of some older-model Jeeps with the rear-mounted tanks. The tanks have little structure to protect them if struck from behind, making them susceptible to punctures and fires.Federal documents show at least 75 people have died in post-crash fires due to the rear-mounted tanks.The 11-woman, one-man jury ruled after a seven-day trial Chrysler was 99 percent at fault for the crash.

Mattel appoints permanent CEONEW YORK — Mattel, the maker of Barbie dolls and Hot Wheels cars, named Christopher Sinclair as its permanent CEO Thursday.Sinclair has been interim CEO since January, when Bryan Stockton resigned from the top job as the company reported disappointing fourth-quarter results.During the important holiday shopping season, Barbie sales fell 12 percent from a year ago, American Girl sales fell 4 percent and Fisher-Price sales fell 11 percent.Sinclair, 64, has been on Mattel’s board for about 19 years and was a former executive at PepsiCo. He will remain chairman.Mattel also promoted President, Chief Brands Officer Richard Dickson to president and chief operating officer.
