Verona L. McCandless, 79, of Wilkesboro, N.C., formerly of Butler, died at 12:33 p.m. Thursday at the Forsyth Medical Center in North Carolina.

Born Nov. 11, 1927, in Glenville, W.Va., she was the daughter of Alferd and Hazel Stout Hess.

She was a member of the Butler Wesleyan Methodist Church, the Butler Artist Guild, the Butler Historical Society and the Spinners and the Weavers Guild.

She also had owned the Historic Great Belt Hotel in Herman.

Mrs. McCandless enjoyed oil painting, water coloring and candle making.

Surviving are a daughter with whom she made her home, Mrs. Earl (Marilyn Sue) Parsons of Wilkesboro, N.C.; two sons, Dwight L. McCandless III and his wife, Diana, of Butler and Shawn McCandless and his wife, Joyce, of Butler; seven grandchildren, Aric, Leanne, Brenda, Ed, Tom, Mike and Beth; 11 great-grandchildren, Katie, Andrew, Jennifer, Nicole, Bobby, Joey, Heather, Alicia, Courtney, Hannah and Abagail; a sister, Mrs. Richard (Eva) Ransom of Flagler Beach, Fla.; a cousin, Beverly of Florida; a niece, Bobbie Sue of Florida; and a great-niece, Morgan of Flordia.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Dwight Lambie McCandless II, who died May 24, 1993.

<B>McCANDLESS — </B>Friends of Verona L. McCandless, who died Thursday, July 19, 2007, will be received from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the <B>young funeral home</B> in Butler. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home with the Rev. James A. Lynn officiating.
