HOOK LINE & SINKER - Gambling
There are three phases
to gambling addiction.
■ HOOK — THE WINNING PHASE In the beginning, gambling addicts think of gambling as exciting.
This phase may involve a big win. Nearly half of
those addicted to gambling have one big win early on.
The gambler may think this is proof of his intelligence or luck and may fantasize about getting rich. This phase also involves the search for action.
■ LINE — THE LOSING PHASE Here, the gambler begins to lose regularly, and losses may be heavy. As losses pile up, the gambler’s selfimage as a winner starts to come apart. He starts gambling to win back losses.
This phase also involves borrowing money and hiding losses. Borrowing affects the gambler’s finances and relationships with others, and the gambler starts to avoid people who have lent him money.
■ SINKER — THE DESPERATION PHASE
Gambling becomes the most important thing to the gambler. This involves heavy borrowing and even stealing.
The gambler will do almost anything to get money for gambling, including lying, cheating,
stealing and selling stolen goods.
This phase also may involve thoughts of suicide if the gambler has become hopeless and deeply depressed.
