HARRISBURG — Pennsylvania Gov. Ed Rendell is asking federal officials to examine whether the Western Pennsylvania counties hit by severe storms last week qualify for federal disaster relief.

Rendell made the request of the Federal Emergency Management Agency and the Small Business Administration.

There was major damage last week from storms in Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. In some places, the rainfall was the heaviest since remnants of Hurricane Ivan caused severe flooding in 2004.
