BETHEL PARK — A 70-year-old man has been jailed on charges he made a bomb threat that prompted the evacuation of a Pittsburgh-area mall, but claims it was a joking remark that's been blown out of proportion.

Frank Zahler of Castle Shannon blames his arrest on “hoity, toity kids” to whom he made the remarks in a Barnes & Noble bookstore at the South Hills Village Mall in Bethel Park after 6 p.m. Sunday.

That's where police say Zahler asked some other customers to watch his briefcase, then joked it contained some explosives relating to the Boston Marathon. The customers alerted the store's manager, who called police who, in turn, alerted a bomb squad and evacuated the mall.

EXPORT — An auctioneer says state police removed a device labeled a World War I-era hand grenade from a Western Pennsylvania auction due to safety concerns.The owner of Bill Evans Auction Service of Murrysville said a trooper took the cylinder-shaped hand grenade from Saturday morning's auction at the Export Fire Hall.Bill Evans said it appeared to be a “potato masher” style used by German soldiers during both world wars.Evans said he didn't know whether the device was live or not. He said the trigger was secured with plastic ties.

SHANKSVILLE — Gov. Tom Corbett on Saturday joined volunteers who are planting thousands of trees at the Flight 93 National Memorial.Corbett and first lady Susan Corbett laid flowers at the memorial wall before an event honoring the 33 passengers and seven crew members killed when the plane crashed into a field on Sept. 11, 2001, after passengers fought back against hijackers.“We are planting these trees not only in their memory, but in honor of the futures they assured for countless citizens by planting the first seeds of resistance to assure our nation's freedom,” Corbett said.
