PITTSBURGH — A graduate of Knoch High School has been elected president of the American Physical Therapy Association during the group's annual convention June 9 and 10 in Tampa, Fla.

Paul Rockar, who is a 1971 graduate of Knoch High School, is the CEO of UPMC Center for Rehab Services.

He earned a bachelor's in physical therapy from the University of Pennsylvania in 1975. He received his master's in orthopaedic and sports physical therapy from the University of Pittsburgh in 1981.

Rockar also earned a doctorate of physical therapy from Temple University in 2007.

Rockar is a published academic and had been an adjunct assistant professor at Slippery Rock University, Duquesne University and the University of Pittsburgh.

He helped with the development of the University of Pittsburgh's orthopaedic physical therapy track of study for the School of Health and Rehabilitation Sciences.

Rockar had served as vice president of the APTA, which represents 80,000 people studying and working in physical therapy.

PITTSBURGH — The Subway stores of Butler were honored by the American Red Cross Blood Services, Greater Alleghenies Region, during the region's annual meeting June 5 at the Consol Energy Center.The Butler stores received the Greater Alleghenies Region's Community Partnership Award. The award was presented to Mike and Mary Waggoner, Butler Subway franchises since 1995 and owners of eight restaurants in Butler, Harrisville, Saxonburg and Slippery Rock.Red Cross officials recognized the Waggoners for supporting blood drives in Butler County for 17 years.In the last year, Subway of Butler donated more than 400 6-inch sub coupons and 650 free cookie coupons for more than a dozen blood drives, including those at Slippery Rock University.The Waggoners were among 49 individuals, businesses and organizations honored by the Red Cross.

BUTLER TWP — A job fair for military veterans is planned for July 30 at the auditorium of VA Butler Healthcare, 325 New Castle Road.The fair is being held from 9 a.m. to noon for veteran job seekers, active duty military members, National Guard and Reserve members and eligible spouses.This is a free fair for both employers and job seekers.If you need assistance registering, please contact us at hiringourheroes@uschamber.com. Already 35 employers, many of who are national companies, have signed on to participate as well as 150 veterans.The fair is sponsored by the Butler County Chamber of Commerce, VA Butler Healthcare, Butler County Veterans Services and the Pennsylvania Chamber of Business & Industry.
