GROVE CITY — Grove City College women's basketball coach Sarah Harris resigned recently.

The Wolverines were 12-14, 8-6 in the Presidents' Athletic Conference last season.

GCC improved in each of her four seasons as coach, finishing 5-20, 11-14, 11-14 with seven PAC wins and 12-14. Harris was named PAC Coach of the Year for the 2008-09 season.

County women help Titans to winNEW WILMINGTON — Three Butler County athletes helped the Westminster College women's track and field team to a 98-42 victory over Grove City College Wednesday.Slippery Rock High graduate Abbey Basta won the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 1 minute, 6.73 seconds.Freeport's Merrissa Malcolm took the pole vault with a leap of 3.05 meters, while Moniteau product Amber Dillaman won the javelin with an effort of 32.68.

Sheppeck, Pennell spark GCC softballGROVE CITY — Butler High School graduate Amanda Sheppeck smacked a two-run home run in the Grove City College softball team's 2-0 win over Westminster Wednesday.Seneca Valley's Lauren Pennell earned the save by pitching the sixth and seventh innings.

NBA to address resting playersNEW YORK — David Stern says the issue of players resting at the end of the regular season will be discussed among NBA executives, though he doesn't see anything coming of it.The commissioner said Wednesday he is "troubled by it, because it would be our preference that healthy players play," but says the decision is one that has always been left up to the teams.The Cleveland Cavaliers have not played LeBron James since clinching the NBA's best record.

WVU players to honor minersMORGANTOWN, W.Va. — West Virginia's football players will wear a helmet decal honoring the 29 coal miners killed in the Upper Big Branch Mine blast April 5.Coach Bill Stewart said Wednesday that players will wear the decals at the team's annual Gold-Blue game on April 30 and throughout the 2010 football season.The decal will be a white circle with a black No. 29 in the middle.

Ex-player who shot coach gets lifeALLISON, Iowa — A judge Wednesday sentenced a former high school football player to life in prison, telling him he had chosen to commit an evil act in killing his former coach, Ed Thomas.Mark D. Becker, 24, will spend the rest of his life in prison without the possibility of parole for gunning down Thomas at the Aplington-Parkersburg High School weight room on June 24.A jury convicted Becker of first-degree murder in March, rejecting an insanity plea. The conviction carried a mandatory life sentence.

Baseball open to tobacco banWASHINGTON — Major League Baseball and its players union tell Congress they are willing to discuss banning smokeless tobacco during their next round of collective bargaining.At a hearing, House Energy and Commerce Committee Wednesday, representatives called on baseball and its players to agree to bar major leaguers from using chew, dip or similar products during games. Smokeless tobacco is banned in the minors.
