Slippery Rock girls defense controls Corry, 64-20

Defense was the name of the game for Slippery Rock in its 64-20 District 10 5A girls basketball quarterfinal win over Corry Saturday at Farrell High School.

“We didn't shoot the ball very well in the first half,” Slippery Rock coach Amber Osborn said. “Our defense helped us get turnovers and quick baskets the other way.

“Defense was the key to this win, no doubt about that.”

The Rockets (18-4) allowed just five points in each quarter and limited Corry (4-18) to eight field goals in the contest.

MaryAnn Ackerman and Anna Kadlubek scored 17 points each for Slippery Rock, which had a 27-10 lead by halftime. The margin after three quarters was 51-15.

Emma McDermott added 11 points in the win.

The Rockets played their first game in 11 days.

“Rust may have been a factor a little in the beginning,” Osborn said of Saturday's win. “We had one scrimmage since our last game and had another one canceled because of the weather.

“We weren't sure if Corry would play a zone or man against us, either. They came out in a man defense and we had to adjust to that.”

Slippery Rock plays Hickory in the semifinal round at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday at Sharon High School.
