CRANBERRY TWP — A Michigan man has been charged after allegedly stealing a vehicle on Nov. 30 and driving it to Cranberry Township.

Deonta Dux, 18, of Berkley, Mich., is charged by Cranberry police with receiving stolen property, driving while suspended or revoked and improperly displaying a license plate.

According to the criminal complaint, officers were patrolling through the parking lot of a township hotel at 11:09 p.m. Friday when they saw a Chevrolet Monte Carlo idling in a parking spot. They could not read the license plate, which was obscured by dirt. The car then left the parking lot “at a high rate of speed,” the complaint states.

Officers followed the vehicle onto Route 19, and eventually pulled up behind it at a red light. They were able to make out the license plate, and a check of the system showed that the car had been reported as stolen in Michigan.

Officers made a traffic stop in a parking lot on North Gate Drive and ordered the driver out of the vehicle. They identified Dux as the driver, and he “was uncooperative and refused to give his Social Security number for identification purposes,” the complaint states.

A check with the Oakland County Sheriff's Office in Michigan confirmed that the vehicle was stolen, as the owner said he did not give Dux permission to drive it. Officers also found that Dux's license was suspended, the complaint states.

Dux was arraigned Saturday and booked in lieu of $30,000 bail. A Dec. 14 preliminary hearing is scheduled before District Judge David Kovach.

It was unclear why Dux allegedly drove the stolen vehicle to Cranberry Township.
