West Shamokin's 1-2 punch dooms Freeport

BUFFALO TWP - West Shamokin boys basketball coach Mike Nagy knows how his offense is supposed to work.

He saw a good example of it in Friday's game at Freeport.

With the outside shooting touch of Brett Ashley and the inside presence of Jerry Wilson, the Wolves have made their presence known in Section 1-AA this season.

Ashley netted 30 points, including 18 on six 3-pointers, and Wilson added 15 points more to power West Shamokin to a 57-42 victory.

"We like to do that, but it doesn't always work," said Nagy. "Jerry has had such a successful season and when (teams) have doubled down on him, Brett can shoot the three and stretch the defense.

"When it works, it's great," Nagy added.

Freeport held a 4-3 lead with 5:32 left in the first quarter before the Wolves (14-6, 8-4) took control by scoring the next nine points and 22 of the next 26 to take a 25-8 advantage with 2:37 left before halftime.

At that point, Ashley had 17 points, including three treys and a three-point play.

Wilson scored West Shamokin's final two baskets before the half to help the team to a 29-14 lead.

The duo combined for 25 of the Wolves' 29 points at the break.

"I thought West Shamokin was a great team defensively and we struggled with our shooting from the field," said Freeport coach Mike Beale. "They physically handled us.

"With Wilson, Ashley and (guard Frank) Nagy, that's three core players that play well together," Beale added.

West Shamokin's biggest lead, 21 points, occurred three times in the second half, the final time at 54-33 with 2:42 remaining.

"We struggled on offense and they executed their offense and hit the 3-pointers when they had to," said Beale. "They're a playoff (bound) team. I'm happy for Coach Nagy."

The Yellowjackets (8-10, 4-8) played stronger in the second half by scoring 28 points, including all of Brian Zimmerman's 10 points and seven of Chris Plocki's nine points.

"It's definitely been a transition year," said Beale. "We've had a lot of young players stepping up and doing well.

"The seniors have been great leaders this year. They've stayed the course. They've provided leadership off the court as well as on," he added.

Those players, who were honored Friday on Senior Night, included Plocki, Tim Mackowski, Brad Naedele, Ian Kaminski and Andy Rupert.
