EVANS CITY — The council confirmed on Monday night that its members would welcome Brennan Builders to the borough with open arms.

Bob Brennan, president of Brennan Builders, told council members his company is interested in buying and slightly modifying the former Church of God property on Mars-Evans City Road.

Brennan said he attended the meeting to see if council would be receptive to his plans, which would place the business headquarters in the borough’s commercial overlay district.

He said the 50-year-old residential construction company builds about 30 homes per year.

The builder said his business would fit the use requirements in the overlay district, with the exception of the addition of a sign.

Brennan said he would need to install a sign that is larger than the size permitted in the overlay district.

Planning commission member Kevin Harancher told council when the borough’s comprehensive plan was drawn up and the overlay district created, the sign portion was “very evasive.”

Harancher said the result was a commercial district in which businesses are permitted only a small placard-sized sign, which he agreed is unrealistic.

Brennan said the sign would be similar to the Church of God sign currently on the property, and he hesitates to close on the property’s purchase before he knows if the borough would be receptive to his needs.

Paul Foster made a motion that the council encourage Brennan’s move to the borough. The action was unanimously approved by the council.

Brennan said after his father, Brennan Builder founder Kenneth C. Brennan, died two years ago, he decided to move the business from the Prospect area to a more central location.

“I was looking around as to where that should be, and found the Church of God property,” Brennan said.

He said the existing sanctuary would become the company’s offices, and a new wing he would place in back of the property would house a design center where customers could pick out floor and wall surfaces and other features of their prospective new homes. He said the existing house on the property would be torn down.

Borough solicitor Mike Gallagher recommended Brennan present his plans to the planning commission for review and recommendations to the council.
