Rams splash past Butler
BUTLER TWP — After a quick start, the Butler boys swimming and diving team tried to sustain its momentum against Pine-Richland.
The Rams, however, stemmed the tide and came away with a 102-84 victory Thursday.
In the girls meet, the Rams also prevailed with a 115-71 victory.
"We swam a little flat on the guys side," said Pine-Richland coach Pete Barry. "The boys came together and swam well. They responded and pulled it out," Barry added.
"Our guys really wanted this one," said Butler coach Dacia Como. "Their record is not as good as the girls, but a lot of people came away with their personal-best times and some were dropping their times."
Heath Calhoun easily won the 1-meter diving with 285.60 points, more than 65 points ahead of Dominic Giordano. Jake Allen, who qualified for the WPIAL meet, finished third for Butler (1-4).
The 200-yard medley team of Travis Myers, Matt Goettler, Brandon Walsh and Alex Bauer (1 minute, 46.40 seconds) opened the swimming portion victorious, followed by Bauer's win in the 200 free (2:05.70) and Goettler in the 200 individual medley (2:08.90).
The Rams however, took second and third place in the relay, then second through fourth in the 200 free and 200 IM to keep pace.
The Rams (1-4, 1-1) won the next five events to begin to pull away.
Other Tornado winners were Myers in the 100 back (1:01.15), Goettler in the 100 breaststroke (1:03.83) and the 400 free relay team of Myers, Noah Neigh, Bauer and Goettler (3:41.33).
"The 400 free relay were just two seconds off qualifying (for the WPIAL meet)," said Como. "Each time out they're getting closer."
For those keeping track, Goettler won all four of his events.
"He's just in his second year for us," said Como. "He's already qualified for a couple of events."
In the girls meet, the Tornado (3-2) had their hands full with a very large Rams squad (3-2, 1-1).
"Their girls team is really good," said Como. "It was nice to see those girls push our girls."
"The girls meet, we knew it would be a mismatch," Barry said. "We came in here with 40 girls and have a strong freshman class."
The Tornado received wins from Brittney Grenet in 1-meter diving (224.20 points), Morgan Morrison in the 100 free (58.85), Brianna Keelan in the 100 back (1:05.82) and Taylor Campbell in the 100 breast (1:12.90).
"My main goal is to get as many kids to represent the team at the WPIAL meet — even though the team record doesn't show it," said Como."
Notes: The Rams' Kristen Murslack set the pool record in the 200 IM with a time 2:09.27, breaking the previous standard held by Seneca Valley's Amanda Smith (2:09.29 in 2002).
