Oakland Catholic earns title
HERSHEY - Now it can be revealed exactly what Oakland Catholic's players had under their jerseys - a motivational slogan.
Moments after the Eagles beat Cheltenham High School 55-37 Friday to win the PIAA Class AAAA state championship, several girls ripped off their jerseys in a Brandi Chastain-like moment to show "Can You Taste the Chocolate?" handwritten on their undershirts.
"We finally tasted it," said Erica Prosser, who scored 10 points.
No one except the players knew they wore that slogan on their shirts for every game this year. It was something special they wanted to do together to rally the team back to Hershey for the fifth time in six seasons.
Even coach Rich Irr was surprised.
"I knew nothing about that," Irr said, his gold medal draped around his neck.
Eve Pyle scored 20 points and had nine rebounds, and Brianne O'Rourke added 13 points and eight rebounds for Oakland Catholic (30-2). The Golden Eagles also won titles this decade in 2001 and 2003.
The players had another message on their official championship T-shirts, this one saying "Rich and Famous," a play on the first name of their coach.
"We love making jokes about his name," said junior guard Becca Rothenberger.
The game-worn T-shirts were O'Rourke's idea.
"I'm glad we can finally show them off," Rothenberger said.
The shirts could have come out after the first quarter. This game turned into a rout early, with the Eagles taking a 31-19 halftime lead.
"Our winning this game would have been a bigger story than 'Hoosiers,'" Cheltenham coach Bob Schaefer said.
Oakland Catholic played in the girls Class AAAA final for the fifth time in six seasons and has three Division I recruits in Sarah Bucar (West Virginia), O'Rourke (Penn State) and Pyle (Miami of Ohio).
Oakland held the Panthers without a 3-point basket and to just 26 percent shooting from the floor.
"They can score, they can rebound and they've been defending like crazy all year," Irr said. "Tonight, I thought we played an excellent defensive game."
