Butler man pleads guilty, sentenced on drug charges
A Butler man has been sentenced to serve 108 months in federal prison followed by six years of probation after pleading guilty to charges of possessing and conspiring to distribute crack cocaine and heroin.
Mark Carter, 35, was sentenced to serve three concurrent terms of 108 months in prison in exchange for pleading guilty to possession with intent to distribute 28 grams or more of cocaine base and two counts of conspiracy to distribute and possess with intent to distribute 28 grams or more of cocaine base and heroin. The sentence includes six years of supervised release to be served concurrently for each charge after he is released from incarceration.
Twelve similar charges were dismissed as part of a plea agreement reached in February 2020.
U.S. District Judge Cathy Bissoon ordered the sentence on Nov. 17.
Carter was 29 when he was arrested in June 2016 by state police and the Butler County Drug Task Force following a raid on a home on East Brady Street.
Police seized 326 stamp bags of heroin, 11 bags of crack cocaine, other drug contraband and $7,612. A woman who was with Carter when officers executed a search warrant also was arrested. An arrest warrant was issued for a third codefendant, who eventually was arrested.
In 2016, police said Carter's home was on Hickory Street, but he had been staying in an East Brady Street apartment for some time before he was arrested.
After he was taken into custody, Carter told officers there was heroin and crack in the bedroom where officers found him, and there was a lot of money in the closet.
A search of Carter's room turned up two plastic bags, each containing raw heroin and large chunks of crack, according to court documents. Additionally, police found three stamp bags of suspected heroin and a small amount of marijuana.
Officers estimated the street value of the seized drugs at tens of thousands of dollars.
Carter and both codefendants were indicted in U.S. District Court in Pittsburgh in June 2016. Carter pleaded not guilty in November 2019, but changed his plea to guilty in February 2020.
Before sentencing, Carter was being held in the county prison. He was remanded to the custody of U.S. marshals after he was sentenced.
Codefendant Brandon Morris, 34, was sentenced in July 2020 to 70 months in prison, and Janell Hunter, 25, the second codefendant, was sentenced in June this year two years of probation.
