Big inning propels Sliders
SLIPPERY ROCK — It was the kind of inning you hope comes with a bat in your hand and not a glove.
Slippery Rock sent nine batters to the plate before an out was recorded as the Sliders scored six times in the bottom of the sixth inning en route to a 10-3 win over Lorain County (OH) in Prospect League baseball action Thursday night at Critchfield Park.
The Sliders held a modest 3-2 edge entering the bottom of the sixth, but Lorain starting pitcher, right-hander Pat Mulligan, encountered trouble right away.
A.J. Miller doubled to lead off the frame and Jeremy Banks followed with a walk.
Sean Mahley laid down what he thought was a sacrifice bunt, but Mulligan's attempt to force out Miller at third base was late and the bases were loaded.
Zach Hofer followed with a two-run double and Mahley came home on a throwing error for a 6-2 lead.
Three more runs would follow in the inning, including a two-run double off the bat of Brian Davila and an RBI-single from Kyle Mossbarger.
"(Mulligan) was not coming inside at all," said Slippery Rock manager Andy Chalot. "Everything he threw was from the middle of the plate to the outside. We kept telling our guys to take him the other way and we must have had four or five hits to the opposite field just in that inning."
Mulligan did not survive the frame, getting pulled after Davila's double in favor of Brandon Cantrill.
"We were short with our bullpen tonight, not many guys were available," said Ironmen manager Eric Cormell. "(Mulligan) was missing with his off-speed stuff, so he was forced to come down the middle with his fastball. To Slippery Rock's credit, they hit it all over the park."
The recipient of Slippery Rock's big inning was Sliders' starter Rich Raraigh, who worked 6X\c innings and gave up three runs on eight hits. He struck out seven and walked one in the win.
Raraigh was dominant at times, retiring the Ironmen on just four pitches in the top of the sixth.
He was relieved by Mark Allen Bounds after giving up a run in the top of the seventh.
"He threw 28 pitches in the first inning and then 50 combined over the next five innings," Chalot said of Raraigh. "The long break he had on the bench with our big inning, I think that got to him. I was contemplating not even sending him back out after that."
Bounds pitched the final 2⅓ innings to close the game, allowing just one base runner.
Lorain (6-7) led 2-0 after its half of the fourth inning, but the Sliders took a one-run lead in the bottom of the inning.
Banks scored on an error, Sam Trecaso's base hit plated Mahley and Hofer came home on a successful double-steal.
Slippery Rock (5-7) closed the scoring with Davila's run-scoring single in the seventh.
