PLUM — Ski lifts at Boyce Park near Pittsburgh are broken again, having stranded about 50 skiers just days after others were stranded in mid-air and had to be lowered to the ground by ropes.

The ski slopes at the Allegheny County-owned park about 15 miles east of Pittsburgh reopened Wednesday and operated normally until about 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The lifts had been closed since Sunday after the ski lift became stuck on Saturday.

State regulators had inspected the repaired lifts and said they were safe. It's not clear when — or if — the lifts will open again.

The park also features snow tubing and a beginner's ski area. Those areas are served by “magic carpet” lifts that pull riders up the hill along the ground and remain open.

Nobody was hurt either time the lifts broke down.

ERIE — Some residents of northwestern Pennsylvania might get to keep their 814 area code.The state Public Utility Commission voted Thursday to review its decision to assign the new 582 area code to a nine-county region that includes Erie.The agency initially approved the change because the 814 area code is projected to run out of numbers by early 2013. Officials decided to convert nine counties to the 582 area code on Feb. 1, 2012.Commissioners now say they will hold more public hearings on the matter after receiving more than 40 petitions against the geographic split.Some opponents prefer a plan to “overlay” the 582 area code, meaning current 814 customers would keep that area code and new phone customers would be assigned 582.

CORAOPOLIS — The Moon Area School Board near Pittsburgh has rejected an arbitrator’s award for a new teacher’s contract, meaning teachers may strike for a second time this school year.The district’s 293 teachers picketed for 13 days in November before agreeing to nonbinding arbitration. They overwhelmingly accepted the arbitrator’s finding on Monday, even though union officials say the school board got its way on most issues.But district solicitor Jack Cambest says the award fell short of the board’s wage and benefit goals and language that gives the district more control over teachers’ time during the work day.The teachers are working under terms of a contract that expired June 30.
