Annual show moves to Alameda Park
BUTLER TWP — The Penn State Master Gardeners of Butler County and the Butler County Chamber of Commerce will present their 10th annual Spring Garden Market & Home Show on Saturday at Alameda Park.
Sponsors for this event, which runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., are Eisler Landscapes, KenMac Rentals & Sales and Butler County Tourism.
After years at another location, the Spring Garden Market & Home Show is moving to Alameda Park in Butler this year.
The entire back section of the park near the Odd Fellows Pavilion will be cordoned off from traffic to accommodate the show.
Alice Christy, one of the Master Gardener coordinators for the show, is pleased with the new location.
“I wasn’t aware of all the changes that have taken place at the park with the roads and shelters,” Christie said. “It’s a beautiful setting.”
Visitors will be able to stroll along paved paths lined with vendors selling perennial flowers, native plants, daylilies, bonsai and more.
Many local businesses as well as vendors from other areas will be showcasing everything from crafts to home improvement and personal health information. Christy said there will be more vendors.
Food vendors will be set up in the Odd Fellows Pavilion to provide a wide choice of foods ranging from mushroom sandwiches and hot sausages to sweet treats such as funnel cakes, apple dumplings, cookies and ice cream.
Children’s activities provided by Butler County Children’s Center will take place in Shelter 3. In the same shelter, In His Care will have bubble-blowing activities.
Leadership Butler County asks visitors to drop off new and gently used children’s clothing and shoes at the Garden Market for their “Stuff-The-Bus” project. These items will be distributed later to area families in need.
For new gardeners as well as gardening enthusiasts, the Penn State Master Gardeners, in their bright green shirts, will be available to answer garden-related questions.
They will be stationed at the Master Gardener Plant Sale shelter or at the Announcement Tent, where information about the Master Gardener-staffed “Greenline” is available.
Butler County 4-H will provide plant valet service; customers can pick up their plants at the Garden Market & Home Show entrance.
There will be two sessions of speakers at this year’s event. Master Gardeners Julie Dandoy and Justine Brown will be speaking at 11 a.m. on “Every Drop Counts — The Importance of Rain Barrels.”
Home Depot will be providing $10 coupons to purchase a rain barrel and a rain barrel will be given away to one of the lucky participants.
Registration for 11 a.m. presentations is requested; call the Butler County Recycling and Waste Management Office at 724-284-5305.
At 1 p.m., Laura Deeter, associate professor of Horticulture at The Ohio State University Agricultural Technical Institute in Wooster, Ohio, will speak on “Garden Smarter Not Harder: Ways to Reduce Maintenance.
Deeter is an engaging and humorous speaker who travels extensively around the country speaking on a wide variety of gardening topics.
Class participants, said Deeter, will “enjoy a romp through seasonal maintenance of the garden and learn ways to reduce the amount of work” so they can enjoy their gardens more. Seating is limited, so an early arrival is recommended.
Visitors can park in the Friedman’s Supermarket lot at the Point Shopping Center where two shuttles will be making pick ups and drop offs.
The Civil Air Patrol will be helping with parking.
