SV teachers earn honorable mention
JACKSON TWP — Six teachers in the Seneca Valley School District received an honorable mention during the Carnegie Science Awards last month.
The awards are given out annually in an attempt to recognize innovative teaching in science and technology across Western Pennsylvania.
The awards are split into elementary, middle, high school and university-level teachers.
Seneca Valley teachers Kelly Weston, Rebecca Finch, David Lowe, Amy Palaski, Dean Walker and Patti Griest were nominated for the award in part because of their dedication to starting the Seneca Valley Science Honor Society.
According to school officials, those teachers have compiled a 200-member Science Honor Society at the school. Those teachers also have organized a monthly STEM lecture series that brings outside professionals to talk to students about careers in science, technology, engineering and math.
Those teachers also are responsible for organizing the annual STEM fair at the high school.
The fair highlighted nearly 200 student participants with nearly 100 projects on display.
The Carnegie Science Awards program honors teachers from around the region. The six Seneca Valley teachers will receive their honorable mention awards during a formal celebration at the Carnegie Music Hall in Pittsburgh May 8.
