A marvelous night for a Moon Dance

Participants move to the music at an Oldies Dance at the Unkranian Club.

It's a marvelous night for a moon dance, according to the song. And the organizers of the upcoming Moonlight Dance, set for Saturday, hope it proves true in reality.

Staged in the back parking lot of the Kings Restaurant, 191 New Castle Road, the Moonlight Dance is the idea of Marty and Kathy Tack of Golden Oldies DJ in response to COVID-19 restrictions.

Running from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., the dance will follow a monthly car cruise in the Kings parking lot, according to Tack.

Tack used to DJ oldies dances at the Ukrainian Club in Lyndora, which were canceled in the wake of the pandemic.

Marty Tack said, “All of the elderly people that attended the dances kept asking, 'When we will be allowed to dance again?'

“I came up with an idea to have a Moonlight Dance in a parking lot under the moon and parking lot lights,” he said. “It would be like the Old Neighborhood Nights we used to have year ago in a school lot with a DJ, bands and concession stands.”

Tack said he talked to Gregg Doty, the manager of Kings, who thought it was a great idea.

Doty said at that time of day the restaurant business slows down, and patrons can park in the lot in front of the building, leaving the back lot available for dancing.

“Marty does all the music. He does everything,” Doty said. “We'll put a tent out there with a steam table and serve cups of soup. We will have a griddle there to do grilled cheese sandwiches. The weather will probably be colder.”

Doty said it will make a nice compliment to the monthly car cruises at his location.

The Tacks said dance participants should wear masks, maintain social distancing and bring their own chairs to sit out a number.

The Tacks used to have a monthly dance at the Ukrainian Club featuring music from the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s.

“Most of our crowd are in their 70s and 80s,” he said.

“It is a real shame that seniors have spend their retirement days cooped up in their homes because of this pandemic.

“For some, this might be the only exercise that they get even before the pandemic,” he said.

“They love going to the dances, making new friends and getting some exercise by dancing. When you have friends, this adds years to your life, and this may be the only exercise they do,” he said.

There is no charge to attend the dance, and Tack said he has emailed a list of Ukrainian Club regulars of the new location as well as placed fliers advertising the dance around the Butler area.

The Tacks said this will probably be the last dance of the season.
