Butler looks to right ship vs. Foxes
BUTLER TWP— It wasn't Friday the 13th last weekend. It just seemed that way to Butler.
Golden Tornado football coach Garry Cathell is still trying to figure out what happened to his team during its 20-7 loss to Norwin.
"You reflect on it, look at the films and it's like, boy oh boy oh boy,"he said. "That was just a crazy night."
Butler had two errant long snaps by two different centers, fumbled away a kickoff at a critical time and dropped a pair of would-be touchdown passes in the loss.
"Andy Strutt had his hands on one and so did Jordan Roycroft,"Cathell said. "When do those kids drop passes?Never.
"We do live kick and punt returns in practice all the time. You can never guarantee your kids aren't going to lose the football. It rarely happens, but it happens. (Mike Bresnahan's) just came at a bad time and Norwin took advantage of it."
While practicing a kick return during practice Sept. 5, Butler lost standout linebacker Eric Petanovich to a torn collarbone tendon.
Petanovich returned to practice this week and is expected to play Friday.
"We're healthy in terms of our starters right now,"Cathell said. "That's something we haven't been able to say for the past couple of years."
Ryan Miller was the center on the errant snap to quarterback Nick Monteleone out of the shotgun. The mistake resulted in an huge loss on third-down that took Butler out of scoring range.
Joe Titler is Butler's long snapper on special teams and snapped the ball over punter Chris Haley's head Friday night.
"Joey's been in that role for three years now,"Cathell said. "He's been very accurate. Ryan snaps the ball to Nick at least 150 times a day and it doesn't go wrong. On that play, it did."
Now Butler (1-1) turns its focus to Fox Chapel (0-2), which comes to Art Bernardi Stadium for a 7:30 p.m. kickoff Friday.
The Foxes have lost to Highlands (23-18) and Upper St. Clair (37-13).
"They've been struggling, but they played Upper St. Clair tough last week,"Cathell said. "They've got a nice quarterback and they like to throw the ball. Defensively, they have good size and their kids are physical.
"It's a team with some nice athletes and we're going to have to play well to beat them."
Butler hasn't played Fox Chapel since 1999, when both teams were a member of the Quad North. But Cathell said his team went against the Foxes in seven-on-seven drills at Pine-Richland this summer.
"They've got active linebackers and they can make plays," the coach said.
While his team anticipated a win over Norwin and a 2-0 start last week, Cathell isn't worried about the Tornado bouncing back with a solid outing this Friday.
"One thing I don't have on this team is any crybabies or excuse-makers,"he said. "There's not a one of them.
"We let the players do some talking Saturday and sure, they're mad and disappointed about the loss. Sometimes you have to get smacked in the face for a reality check. We got punched in the face.
"Now that's over. Our focus is on Fox Chapel," Cathell added.
Through two games, Monteleone has completed 22 of 40 passes for 268 yards and two interceptions. He has yet to throw a touchdown pass in 2006. Roycroft has 11 catches for 175 yards.
Dan D'Amore paces the running game with 18 carries for 85 yards. Butler forced five turnovers against Kiski Area in Week 1, but forced none against Norwin.
"We definitely don't want to lose two straight at home,"Cathell said. "It's elementary school night and Hometown Heroes Night, so we're anticipating another big crowd."
And a much better performance.
