COVID numbers low over long weekend

100% capacity began May 31

Low numbers of new COVID-19 cases and an increase in the statewide recovery rate were reported over the long Memorial Day holiday weekend, which ended with the lifting of occupancy restrictions at all businesses.

Only 35 confirmed new cases were reported over the weekend in the county, and 1,488 new cases were reported statewide, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The number of people who have had the coronavirus since the pandemic began increased to 11,156 in the county and 1,202,863 in the state.

Also over the weekend, Gov. Tom Wolf announced that all businesses, venues and events could return to 100% capacity beginning May 31.

The state order requiring masks for unvaccinated and partially vaccinated individuals will remain in place until June 28 or when 70% of Pennsylvanians age 18 and older get their second dose of Pfizer or Moderna vaccine, or the single-dose Johnson & Johnson vaccine, whichever comes first.

In addition, masks continue to be required on planes, buses, trains and other forms of public transportation traveling into, within or out of the United States and in U.S. transportation hubs, such as airports and stations. Individuals should still follow guidance at workplaces, local businesses, long-term care facilities, hospitals, prisons and homeless shelters, Wolf said.

The statewide recovery rate increased a percentage to 95%.

While only 11 new deaths were reported over the weekend statewide, two of those deaths occurred in the county, raising the total to 417. The state's total is 27,214.

In nursing and personal care homes, there are 71,737 cases among residents and 15,407 cases among employees. Of the deaths in the state, 13,281 have occurred in residents from nursing or personal care hones.

About 28,743 of the cases in the state are among health care workers.

There are 1,028 people hospitalized, including 257 in intensive care. The 14-day average number of people hospitalized per day continues to drop after peaking at 2,661 patients, which is below the peak of 2,751 patients in May 2020.

Although most cases and deaths have occurred in people age 65 and older, the percentage of cases is rising in people up to 49 years old, but is decreasing in people 50 and older, the health department said.

In the county, 81,353 people have been fully vaccinated and 14,271 people are partially vaccinated.

Statewide, 4,699,696 people are fully vaccinated and 1,574,073 people are partially vaccinated. A total of 10,581,876 doses of vaccine have been administered, including 6,273,769 first and single doses and 4,308,107 second doses.
