NEW YORK — Kevin Garnett was suspended by the NBA for the Boston Celtics' second playoff game against the Miami Heat.

The one-game suspension was imposed Sunday after Garnett hit Miami's Quentin Richardson in the head with an elbow with 40 seconds left in Boston's 85-76 win in Game 1 on Saturday night.

The league also fined Richardson $25,000.

The altercation occurred near Miami's bench while Boston's Paul Pierce lay on the floor with an apparent right shoulder injury. Garnett said he was trying to make room for Pierce.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University senior pole vaulter Jen Hansen has received her fourth PSAC Top 10 honor.The Top 10 Awards recognize student-athletes who distinguish themselves in the classroom and in the arena of competition. Hansen recently won her third PSAC indoor pole vault title and has maintained a 4.0 grade point average throughout her collegiate career.

BUTLER TWP — Butler High School athletic director Curt Phillips has submitted his resignation and is accepting a teaching and coaching position at Woodberry Forest, a private school in Virginia.Phillips has been athletic director at Butler for four years and has been employed by the school district for 15 years. He will be a physics teacher and head indoor and outdoor track and field coach at Woodberry Forest, an all-male school of 400 students.Phillips' resignation is expected to be accepted at tonight's Butler school board meeting.

ERIE — Will Nesbitt of Center Township captured the USTA Sectional Tournament's boys 16 division this past weekend.Nesbitt defeated Brian Rubin in the first round 6-0, 6-0 before he knocked off No. 2 seeded Ross Molinaro 6-4, 6-0. In the semifinals, Nesbitt dispatched Alex Brzozowski, then top seed Alok Nimgaonkar 6-3, 3-6, 6-3.
