Students present art, science fair projects at St. Luke

Isaac Salinas, a fourth-grade student in Tamie Malencia’s class at St. Luke Lutheran School, tried to create the unpoppable bubble by using glycerin in his science fair project.

All students at St. Luke Lutheran School in Jefferson Township had the chance to display and demonstrate their projects on April 16 at the annual St. Luke Art and Science Fair.

Each grade level, from preschool to eighth grade, had a theme to follow when creating their art or science project, said Angela Turner, principal at St. Luke.

Kindergarten’s theme was Explore the Seasons; first grade was Create Habitats; second grade was Simple Machines, fifth grade was Demonstrate Experiments, and fourth, sixth and eighth grades were Science Experiments.

Science projects by students in grades four, six and eight were judged. Emma Kroll, Jude Siemer and Isabella Pawloski were first place winners, respectively.

St. Luke families perused the art and science projects on display in the evening. Students who created science projects demonstrated the principles involved in their creations.

Jaxson Hoffman, a fourth grader in Tamie Malencia’s class at St. Luke Lutheran School, studied the most effective deer attractant for his project in the annual Art and Science Fair. He took third place for the project.
Oliver Seimer, an eighth grader in Rachel Robinson’s class at St. Luke Lutheran School, studied whether adding sugar to water in a curved glass would enlarge the refraction of light. He won second place for the project in the school’s annual Science and Art Fair.
Carissa Kovalick, a sixth grader in Rachel Robinson’s class, found that placing bananas in the oven without a paper bag ripened them the fastest of all the methods she tried in her experiment. Carissa took second place in St. Luke School’s annual Art and Science Fair for the experiment.
