EVANS CITY — The busy railroad crossing on Route 68 near Breakneck Creek will be closed next weekend during evening and overnight hours.

The state Department of Transportation announced the closing, during which contractors will replace the railroad crossing.

The closure will be between Pioneer Road and South Washington Street.

The project will begin at 6 p.m. on Nov. 4 and last through 6 a.m. on Nov. 7.

The crossing also will be closed from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. on that Monday.

The times were chosen to provide the least interruption to rush-hour traffic during the workweek.

The posted detour will be Route 19 in Zelienople to Route 228 in Cranberry Township, and then north on Mars-Evans City Road, which becomes South Washington in Evans City.

A $2.3 million milling and paving project was completed in July on 1.79 miles of Route 68 from Washington Street in Evans City to Ridge Road in Jackson Township.

The approaches to the tracks were replaced in that project, and the road paved and sealed.

Contractors will work on the surface of the crossing in the November project.

A similar time schedule was used when a railroad crossing surface was replaced last weekend on Mars-Evans City Road.

The Buffalo & Pittsburgh Railroad’s contractor, Frontier Railroad, will complete the Evans City project.
