Broken locks stop mail delivery at trailer park

Tenants drive to Butler post office

FRANKLIN TWP — Residents of the Golden L Mobile Home Park have gone weeks without mail delivery because of broken locks on their mailboxes.

The park is home to more than 20 trailers, each of which has a mailbox at a centralized location near the entrance.

“Certainly we regret any inconvenience to our customers,” Tad Kelley, a spokesman for the U.S. Postal Service, said in an e-mail. “However, we have been unable to deliver mail to the Golden L Mobile Home Park due to a centralized delivery box where the individual mail receptacles will not lock.”

Kelley said mail cannot be left unsecured, so a few broken locks may cause problems for all the residents.

“Our mail carrier is supposed to service the entire collection of boxes from the back, not open each individual door,” Kelley said.

The park is working to fix the problem.

“We have been in communication with the park owner and have been told the new mail unit was ordered,” Kelley said. “In the interim, customers have been retrieving their mail at the Post Office. We anticipate and hope the new unit is in place soon.”

One resident at the park called the situation frustrating.

“I shouldn’t have to drive to Main Street (Butler) just to get my mail,” she said, adding that she told the landlord she will ask for a reduction in rent each trip she has to make.

A park manager declined to comment.
