Convicted rapist gets 2nd lengthy sentence

He gets 32-64 years in prison

Ralph Skundrich will serve 32 to 64 years in prison for raping a Cranberry Township woman in 2002.

In June, a Butler County jury found Skundrich guilty of burglary, rape, involuntary deviate sexual assault, terroristic threats, and indecent assault. He was sentenced Thursday.

Skundrich, 47, already is serving a 75- to 100-year sentence in state prison for a different rape in Allegheny County.

At the trial this year, the victim testified that she was in her bed on June 6, 2002, when she was awakened by a masked man who claimed to have a knife. The man raped the woman several times under threat to kill her or her sleeping 11-year-old daughter.

She testified that she never saw the knife or the face of the man who attacked her. And the case went cold until 2010, when investigators linked Skundrich to the crime through DNA.

The DNA, estimated by an expert to be 81.3 billion times more likely to belong to Skundrich than be a coincidence, was the only physical evidence investigators presented.

Skundrich denied raping the woman on the stand.

Skundrich has convictions related to drugs, weapons and theft dating back to 1987. He was tied to an alleged murder plot, and at one point appeared on the television show, “America’s Most Wanted.”

J.W. Hernandez Cuebas, Skundrich’s attorney, said his client was targeted by the government because he declined to act as a government informant following a previous arrest.

He said there is no evidence outside of the DNA that Skundrich committed the crime, saying the attacker was identified as being 6 feet tall with red hair and size 12 boots, a description that does not match Skundrich.

“The entire government case hinged on a speck of DNA evidence. No other evidence whatsoever links Ralph Skundrich to this crime,” Hernandez Cuebas said.

“The extreme sentence he received in this case supports the government promise to bury him one way or another.”
