SRU series features tunes of Sinatra, Denver, New Christy Minstrels

The “Rocky Mountain High — John Denver tribute” starring Ted Vigil will go on April 3, 2014, in Slippery Rock University's 2013-14 Performing Arts Series. The tribute is one of two café-style seating shows in the series. The other will feature Dala, at below, made up of Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine, at 4 p.m. May 4, 2014.

SLIPPERY ROCK — Five musical events comprise the 2013-14 Slippery Rock University Performing Arts Series.

The season, with all performances in the University Union, includes:

The New Christy Minstrels, 7:30 p.m. Sept. 6.

The New Christy Minstrels are an American folk group that has recorded more than 20 albums, including their Grammy Award-winning debut album. They are known for such hits as “Green Green,” “Saturday Night,” “Today,” and their cover of “This Land Is Your Land.”

“Simply Sinatra” starring Steve Lippia and featuring the SRU Jazz Ensemble, 7:30 p.m. Oct. 11.

Lippia will interpret some of the most well-known Frank Sinatra hits, including “I've Got You Under My Skin,” “The Lady Is a Tramp,” “My Way,” “The Best Is Yet to Come” and “Come Fly with Me.” SRU's award-winning and internationally traveled Jazz Ensemble will be the back-up band.

The Broadway Boys Holiday Show, 4 p.m. Dec. 8.

The traditional holiday show will bring a collection of singers working on the New York stage to campus. The Broadway Boys infuse elements of pop, funk, gospel and rock into traditional holiday classics and show tunes to create a new and contemporary musical theater sound. The performance will include songs from “The Book of Mormon,” “Wicked,” “Jersey Boys,” “Mary Poppins” and “Spiderman.”

Rocky Mountain High — John Denver tribute starring Ted Vigil, 7:30 p.m. April 3, 2014.

Vigil, accompanied by longtime Denver guitarist Steve Weisberg, will perform “Annie's Song,” “Leavin' on a Jet Plane,” “Thank God I'm a Country Boy” and “Calypso,” among other selections.

Dala — Amanda Walther and Sheila Carabine, 4 p.m. May 4, 2014.

Drawing upon influences such as the Beatles, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young and Bob Dylan, Walther and Carabine write and sing in soprano and alto harmonies. Juno nominees and winners of the 2010 Canadian Folk Music Award for Vocal Group of the Year, the two singers have been featured in the PBS special “Girls from the North Country.”

The series also will offer two bus excursions to regional events, including a Nov. 2 scenic tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's Fallingwater and a March 28 Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra and “West Side Story” film event at Heinz Hall.Series tickets may be ordered by calling 724-738-2018 or by visiting the Russell Wright Alumni House and Conference Center.Season tickets for four shows (the first three plus either the Rocky Mountain High and Dala café-style shows) are $76 for adults, $68 for senior citizens, $60 for youths age 17 and younger, and $20 for SRU students. Patrons may add the fifth show for $15.Individual tickets for the three main stage shows are $22 for adults, $20 for senior citizens, $18 for youths and $8 for SRU students. Tickets to the café-style performances are $20 for adults, $18 for senior citizens, $16 for youths and $8 for SRU students.AVI, the campus food vendor, will offer a variety of food options.
