Batter Up
From left, William Berry, William “Willy” Veccharella and James Ellis Sr., manager of the old-timer’s ball team, compare modern bats on July 1, 1971, with one made for a game against the late Rube Waddell, Pittsburgh Pirate pitcher from Prospect who played sandlot ball in the Evans City-Mars area at the turn of the century. The bat was made in a Mars wood shop, and although extremely long and thick, it weights only 35 ounces.
