You mentioned that teachers should work in the summer to pay for their wages etc... If you asked local teachers what they do over the summer this would be your answer. Most teachers use the summer months to earn their additional college credits needed in order to keep their job. Most of the time at their expense. Many other jobs provide their training for free. Other teachers coach or oversee various activities at the school and they meet througout the summer. Ask any band teacher, dance troop, cheerleading or football coach they will tell you they have little to no summer vacation. Yes, they get paid for these extra positions, but the time put into it does not offset the pay. Some teachers teach summer school classes, while others tutor or provide childcare over the summer. Many teachers come into the schools throughout the summer to make copies, organize their classroom, and plan for the school year. They are not paid extra to do this. The one or two days the school district gives to teachers to complete these tasks prior to the start of the year is not enough. Finally, does anyone realize how much out of pocket money is spent by teachers? Well the IRS allows them to count, I believe, up to $250, but most teachers spend double that amount. Think of that the next time your child brings home a special craft,or shows off a special treat or award, when they play a game inside because it was too cold outside,or even when you see the classroom decorations. The school district sure doesn't cover those expenses. Teachers do it because they want to, not because they have to. All they ask in return is our support and respect.
