Rockets impressive again

Slippery rock football team rolls past Sharpsville, 35-10

SHARPSVILLE — It wasn't exactly like following a script, but for the second straight week, the end result was a dominating win for Slippery Rock High's football team.

Running back Shane Thompson scored three touchdowns, including two on receptions, and the Rocket defense grudgingly gave up yards to Sharpsville's ground attack in a 35-10 victory at McCracken Field Saturday night.

The Blue Devils, who run the Wing-T and prefer not to pass the ball often, found themselves in trouble at halftime, trailing 21-3.

Thompson had scored on a 53-yard screen pass from William Mokel late in the first quarter. He added a 3-yard scoring run in the second period before Mokel and John Sabo hooked up for a 7-yard scoring toss on the final play of the first half.

“We knew if we could get things rolling offensively, we could make things really tough on them,” said Slippery Rock coach Larry Wendereusz. “We knew if they had to throw the ball, we'd win the game.”

Sharpsville's lone score in the first two quarters — a 37-yard field goal by Liam Campbell — was set up when the Blue Devils recovered a muffed punt at Slippery Rock's 27-yard line early in the second period.

Though the Rockets (2-0) did not score in the third quarter, the Blue Devils did not threaten to cut into their deficit. Sharpsville tallied just eight yards on nine plays in the period and failed to get past its own 37-yard line.

Slippery Rock's defense was led by lineman Tony Pilosi. He, along with Andrew Massella and Dylan Twentier, each sacked Sharpsville quarterback Caullin Summers.

Thompson scored his final touchdown on a 29-yard pass from Mokel early in the fourth. Ryan Montgomery added a 14-yard run for another score.

Mokel passed for 201 yards and the three touchdowns.

Through two games, the Rockets have totaled 616 offensive yards and scored 73 points.

Thompson already has five touchdowns on the season.

“We believe we can score on anybody,” he said. “We want to make a run at the region title.”

On an offense with many weapons, Thompson has proved to be the most versatile. In two games, he has rushed for 130 yards and has 150 receiving yards, including 115 on four catches Saturday.

“Shane is very elusive and he has a burst,” said Wendereusz. “It's fun to see a kid who has those two talents.”

The Blue Devils (1-1) finally found the end zone when Summers connected with Garen Levis on a 49-yard bomb with 5:24 left in the game.

The Rockets open Region 3 play when they travel to Titusville on Friday.
