NORTH VERSAILLES — An elderly woman is dead after police shot and killed her outside of her ex-boyfriend's house where she was dressed in black and holding a pistol.

North Versailles police told a Pittsburgh newspaper that 71-year-old Elsa Seman was crouched behind the home of her former boyfriend when a neighbor called about a prowler. Police arrived and ordered the woman to show her hands. Police say Seman pointed the pistol at an officer before being shot.

Police believe Seman planned to confront her former boyfriend and his new girlfriend.

Allegheny County police are investigating the shooting. The officer who fired the shot has been put on paid administration leave pending the investigation.

PITTSBURGH — Microsoft Corp. chairman Bill Gates will be in Pittsburgh today to christen a new computer science school at Carnegie Mellon University.Gates is scheduled to be the keynote speaker at the 3 p.m. ribbon-cutting at the Gates Center for Computer Science. Also opening will be the Hillman Center for Future Generation Technologies.The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation donated $20 million toward the new computer center, and the Henry L. Hillman Foundation donated $10 million toward the technologies center.The buildings include lab and classroom space for the university's computer science school.

PITTSBURGH — Two protest groups are asking for an emergency hearing into allegations that Pittsburgh police are harassing them in the run-up to the opening of a global economic summit.Seeds of Peace and Three Rivers Climate Convergence say in a lawsuit filed in Pittsburgh on Monday that police are harassing them and discouraging their rights to free speech. The groups say a Seeds of Peace bus was illegally searched and seized and that members of the group have been detained by police without cause.The groups are planning to demonstrate against the G-20 summit when it convenes Thursday. The summit is a gathering of nearly two dozen world leaders, whose countries control about 90 percent of the world's wealth.

STATE COLLEGE — An autopsy is planned today on a Penn State University student from Latrobe whose body was found on campus.University Police Director Steve Shelow says there's no reason to suspect foul play in the death of 18-year-old freshman Joseph Dado. He says the death appears to be an accident.Dado was last seen alive leaving the Phi Gamma Delta house around 3 a.m. Sunday. The body was found at the bottom of a stairwell at about 6 p.m. Monday, about 75 yards from where he was last seen alive.

ERIE — A man accused of killing his 5-month-old daughter after becoming enraged over an unhousebroken dog has pleaded guilty to third-degree murder.Vincent Davis could get up to 45 years in prison and a $60,000 fine. The 25-year-old Erie man pleaded guilty Monday; his sentencing is scheduled Nov. 20.Police say Davis became enraged on Feb. 24 when his family's Jack Russell terrier urinated and defecated on the floor. Police say he fatally kicked the dog, then shook his daughter when she began to cry. Savonnia Davis died at a hospital two days later.In addition to third-degree murder, Davis pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor count of cruelty to animals.
