SV boys beat Butler, stay undefeated

Seneca Valley's Maxwell Marcotte fights for a loose ball against Butler's Nick Kilgore in the Raiders' 2-1 home win Thursday.

Will Bruno scored off a pass from Beaux Lizewski with two minutes remaining to lift Seneca Valley's boys soccer team to a 2-1 win over Butler at NexTier Stadium Thursday night.

The Raiders (6-0, 9-0) scored first when Lizewski assisted on a goal from Connor Oros early in the first half.

Butler (3-3, 6-3) scored the tying goal when Landon Mohney found the net in the 54th minute, aided by an assist from Gavin Varner.

Slippery Rock 5, Hickory 1 — Nick Kingerski scored four goals as the Rockets (4-2-2) dumped the Hornets with ease.

David Magliocca added a goal and one assist.

Hunter Berry tallied two helpers and Cullen Birkes one.

Connor Wallace stopped five shots for Slippery Rock.

In a matchup of undefeated teams, Chloe Weiland's goal in the 55th minute pulled Butler even with visiting North Allegheny and the Section 1-4A game ended in a 1-1 tie.Jessica Mohney assisted on Butler's goal.Mackenna Yaracs stopped eight shots for the Golden Tornado (1-0-1, 6-0-1).North Allegheny (2-0-1, 6-0-1) scored the game's first goal in the ninth minute.

Seneca Valley's Lihini Ranaweera and Madison Sharek both made the cut at the Section 1-3A qualifier at Suncrest Golf Course.Ranaweera placed first with a 72 and Sharek's 77 was also well below the cutoff of 91. Both girls will play in the WPIAL Championship next month.Freeport's Lillie Snow and Knoch's Maddie Boyer advanced from the Class 2A qualifier held at Del-Mar Golf Course by carding an 88. Knoch junior Ally Bauer defeated her teammate, sophomore Emily Greb, in the WPIAL Class 2A girls tennis semifinals by scores of 6-2, 6-1, at North Allegheny High School Thursday afternoon.Bauer advances to face Sewickley Academy's Ashley Close in the championship match while Greb will meet Nicole Kempton of South Park in the consolation. Both matches are scheduled for 1 p.m. Friday at North Allegheny.The WPIAL's top three finishers qualify for the state tournament.Bauer and Greb both won two matches Thursday before meeting each other in the semifinal.Butler beat Kiski Area, 4-1, in a non-section match on Wednesday.The Golden Tornado improved to 5-4 overall. Girls VolleyballA-C Valley earned a sweep at Karns City by scores of 25-19, 26-24 and 25-13.Meah Ielase totaled 16 kills and 13 digs, Paige Klingler six kills and 14 digs and Jenna Stefanacci 15 service points and 21 assists for the Falcons (5-1).Bella Ielase chipped in 13 digs.Ava Fox had nine kills and six digs for Karns City.A-C Valley suffered its first loss of the season Wednesday in a sweep at the hands of host Grove City.Despite 11 kills and 12 digs from Meah Ielase, A-C Valley dropped the match by scores of 25-19, 25-13 and 25-22.Stefanacci added 11 assists and Lexi Ruckdeschel nine digs.Pine-Richland 3, Butler 0 — The Golden Tornado bowed to the Rams by scores of 25-20, 26-24 and 25-5.Taylor Welter had seven kills, seven digs and three blocks for Butler, which fell to 2-3 in section play.Megan Penrod tallied 23 digs and Maisy Gibson five kills and five digs.Mars 3, Knoch 0 — The Knights fell to 0-5 in section and 0-7 overall with a 25-21, 25-18, 25-14 loss to the Planets.Nicole Critchlow had 35 digs, Brynnae Coe had 12 assists and 11 digs, and Sierra Mock had six kills for Knoch.Stats for Mars were unavailable.
