Knoch looks to get offense going
JEFFERSON TWP — Failing to score more than 14 points in any of its four losses, Knoch's offense is looking for a breakout game.
The Knights (0-2, 1-4) host Indiana (1-1, 3-2) for a 7 p.m. kickoff Friday — and the Little Indians have proven susceptible to surrendering points. Indiana has allowed 72 points in its past two weeks.
Of course, the team can score fairly often as well.
“We have to find a way to slow them down,” Knoch coach Brandon Mowry said. “They run the triple-option very well. Their quarterback and halfback have been key cogs for them.
“But if we limit our mistakes offensively and don't turn the ball over, we can get our first conference win of the year.”
Before dropping a 35-14 decision to Greensburg Salem last week, the Little Indians had reeled off wins of 44-7 over Burrell, 70-15 over Derry and 41-37 over Plum.
Quarterback Devin Flint has rushed for 404 yards and seven touchdowns, Zach Herrington 312 yards and five TDs, Korbin Wilson 298 yards and five scores. All three are seniors and all three have produced 100-yard rushing games.
Indiana has thrown for only 163 yards all season.
“They're going to pop a couple on us,” Mowry said. “We have to limit those and be able to answer.
“Carson Kosecki is still our quarterback, Keagan Fraser our main running back. We'll use Keagan behind center occasionally just to mix things up.”
Defensively, the Knights are led by end Alex Cotton, outside linebacker Gavin McGowan and inside linebacker Jake Murphy.
“Those guys are athletic,” Mowry said. “Jake is the leader of our defense. We have to be on top of our game and play a fundamentally sound game defensively.
“Offensively, we lost five fumbles last week (in 49-6 loss to Armstrong). We had three different guys fumble in Armstrong territory on three straight possessions. It was like, what is going on here? We need to clean that stuff up.”
Indiana leads the series between the teams, 10-9. The Little Indians scored a 29-6 win over Knoch last year.
The Knights claimed a 56-28 victory in the teams' most recent meeting before that, in 2017.
Armstrong (1-1, 3-2) at Mars (0-2, 0-5)
7 p.m., Friday
Armstrong broke a two-game losing skid by defeating Knoch last week, 49-6 ... Mars was shut out for the second time this season, losing to Plum 29-0.
Armstrong QB Cadin Olsen has thrown for 1,036 yards, 16 TDs and just 3 INTs this season. He also leads the River Hawks with 280 rushing yards and has scored 3 TDs ... Armstrong has scored a total of 146 points in its 3 wins, while scoring just 34 points in its 2 losses (to McKeesport and Hampton).
Mars RB Evan Wright leads the Planets with 397 yards rushing, 190 of those coming in a loss to New Castle Sept. 10 ... QB Rafael Bartley has passed for 259 yards.
Mars defeated Armstrong last year, 27-7.
Freeport (0-0, 1-3) at Valley (0-2, 0-5)
7 p.m., Friday
Improvising after virus concerns forced winless Derry to withdraw from its slated visit, Freeport hosted and bowed to Serra Catholic, 14-3, last week ... Valley was shut out, 6-0, at Deer Lakes.
This will be Freeport's first Allegheny Seven Conference matchup of the season ... The Yellowjackets' defense stepped up last Friday, thwarting an otherwise forceful Serra Catholic attack. But Freeport's offensive catalysts couldn't produce. Junior Ben Lane finished with his ground yardage in the negative. Senior Garrett King successfully delivered only two throws.
In their most recent confrontation, nearly four years ago, Valley's last win streak was foiled by Freeport, 34-6. The two now see each other regularly, as Valley moved up a classification last season. The Vikings have been the meekest of their grouping, dropping the most Allegheny Seven Conference games of any member since joining.
North Catholic (2-0, 5-0) at Burrell (0-1, 0-5)
7 p.m., Friday
North beat East Allegheny last week, 31-14 ... Burrell remained winless with a 35-17 loss to Apollo-Ridge.

Senior Kyle Tipinski, who was a RB last year, has moved to WR and leads the Trojans with 12 receptions for 280 yards and has scored 7 TDs.
Burrell returned just seven of 22 starters from last year's 3-5 team ... Senior RB Caden DiCaprio leads the Bucs with 4 TDs.
The Trojans topped Burrell last year, 66-8.

Entering a matchup of District 9's two hottest squads, the Flying Dutchmen have strung together four straight wins ... Senior QB Christian Coudriet has completed 64% of his throws for 1,073 yards ... Junior WR Logan Mosier paces the team in all-purpose yardage, having piled up 394 receiving yards and adding another 354 in the return game.
The Gremlins have yet to meet a worthy conference opponent. Led by a heavy dose of rushing, Karns City has beaten each of its challengers by at least 3 possessions ... The team is off to its first 5-0 start since 2015, a year in which KC reached the state quarterfinals.
Moniteau (1-3, 1-3) at Brookville (4-1, 4-1)
7 p.m., Friday
Moniteau went back and forth in an affair with Bradford, picking up a 44-38 victory last week ... Brookville gave way to Karns City at home, 41-7.
Juniors Matt Martino and Hunter Stalker headed the charge for the Warriors last week, combining for 452 rushing yards and outmatching Bradford's productive aerial assault. Martino broke loose for a 78-yard surge in the third quarter. All but 13 of Moniteau's 542 yards of total offense came on the ground.
Looking to help Brookville get back on track will be sophomore QB Charlie Krug and junior WR Brayden Kunselman, who've linked up for 6 TDs this season.
Slippery Rock (1-0, 3-0) at Conneaut, OH (0-2, 3-3)
7 p.m., Friday
The Rockets' game against Corry last Friday was canceled because of COVID issues with the latter ... Conneaut defeated Reynolds, 42-22.

Senior RB Shane Thompson, who leads the Rockets with 6 TDs scored this season, has been lost for the season to a collarbone injury sustained in the victory over Grove City ... The Rockets have outscored their opponents, which also include Central Clarion and Sharpsville, by a combined score of 107-24.
Conneaut's two Region 3 games thus far, against Grove City and Hickory, ended in losses of 42-20 and 41-14, respectively.
Port Allegany (2-2) at Union/A-C Valley (3-1)
