State pool party
LEWISBURG — Making history has become a habit for Maggie Gruber.
The Mars High sophomore swam the 100-yard butterfly twice at Wednesday's PIAA Class AA Girls Swimming Championships and she left her mark in both cases.
In the final, Gruber overwhelmed the competition, winning her second straight state title with a time of 54.98 seconds at Bucknell University's Kinney Natatorium.
Scranton Prep's Rebekah Campo entered the event seeded a distant second, and that is where she finished with an effort of 57.57, 2.59 behind Gruber.
“I wanted to improve my time and I actually added a bit,” said Gruber. “But I'm still happy to win a state title.”
“She didn't have any competition in the final,” said Planets coach Heidi Brandon. “She was way ahead right from the start.”
Gruber is used to swimming against herself and, in the butterfly final, she would have had to top her own state record to stay ahead.
Gruber swam a blistering 54.84 in Wednesday's preliminaries, breaking Andrea Marko's previous standard of 54.92, set in 2008.
“I wasn't really aiming for the state record, but I'm glad I got it in the morning,” said Gruber. “I don't think I would have been able to swim that fast in the finals.
“My teammates said that I took a big breath near the wall in the finals, and that is probably what gave me a slower time.”
Two weeks ago, Gruber won WPIAL titles in both the butterfly and 100 backstroke, which she will swim today at states.
Brandon wasn't short on praise for Gruber following Wednesday's effort.
“She carried a lot of weight in here as a sophomore,” Brandon said. “After what she did at WPIALs, the pool was dead silent today. Everybody was watching her and I am very proud of her.”
Last year, Gruber tied Nazareth's Victoria Gillespie for the top spot in the butterfly with a time of 55.47.
“I think last year's title was more exciting for me,” said Gruber. “I wasn't expected to win. I came in seeded third.
“But winning and standing on the top of that awards stand will never get old,” she added.
Penn Township resident and Shady Side Academy senior Anne Marie Bilott placed sixth in the 200 individual medley (2:09.02).
Bilott and Oakland Township resident Hillary Cummings both helped the Indians' 200 medley relay team place third at 1:48.25.
In Wednesday's final event, the 200 freestyle relay, Cummings aided in SSA's fifth-place finish of 1:38.74, which was 4.38 seconds better than the team's seed time.
