Blaze damages Winfield home

Wood burner 'got entirely too hot'

WINFIELD TWP — An overheated wood burner Monday morning started a fire that damaged a mobile home on Kepple Road, authorities said.

No one was injured but a father and son who live at the 1990s-model trailer were left temporarily homeless.

The accidental blaze broke out about 8:25 a.m. apparently while both occupants were home, said Chief John Hartman of the Winfield Township Volunteer Fire Department. The names of the father and son, 71 and 18, were not available this morning.

The pair apparently discovered the fire and got out of the home. Firefighters from three companies were called and an attack crew wasted no time getting inside.

The fire was out in about 15 to 20 minutes, authorities said.

“The fire was contained in the structure,” Hartman said. “The damage to the roof was mostly to the trusses and insulation.”

A damage estimate was not immediately available. The home is insured and occupants reportedly are staying with friends or relatives.

Assisting the Winfield VFD were firefighters from Buffalo Township in Butler County and South Buffalo Township in Armstrong County.

The accidental fire should serve as a safety reminder to other people who live in homes equipped with wood-burning stoves, Hartman said.

“Always keep an eye an them,” he said. “This one got entirely too hot.”
