Warriors earn crucial win
Moniteau couldn't waste time — either on the field or in the standings.
Playing on a muddy field with a mixture of rain and snow falling, the Warriors used a productive first half to post a 30-12 football win at Brookville Friday night.
"We treated this like a playoff game," Warriors coach Jeff Campbell said. "We can't afford to lose anymore.
"I'm not a put-all-your-eggs-in-one-basket kind of guy, but I talked to our team on Monday about the importance of this game. We had to have this one," he added.
Brookville (3-4, 3-4) failed to score until the fourth quarter. Moniteau took a 22-0 lead into halftime.
"We've played on this field in bad conditions before and I know how it gets," Campbell said. "By the second half, this field was going to be gone. We couldn't waste time putting up points.
"By the second half, the mud was ankle deep in some spots."
James Shope paced the Warriors (4-3, 4-3) with 33 carries for 176 yards and three touchdowns. He scored on runs of 29, 17 and 5 yards. Quarterback Kyle Armagost had 13 carries for 73 yards, including a 14-yard TD burst.Armagost also threw for 67 yards and scored on a pair of two-point conversions. Tony Campbell caught three passes for those 67 yards.Moniteau intercepted three passes, one each by Armagost, Devin Wheeler and Austin Hogsett."We just went for it tonight," Coach Campbell said. "We did a lot of blitzing, changing up schemes and formations."We played our best game of the year at Keystone last week and let three plays beat us. Our kids really responded tonight."The Warriors had 334 yards of offense, 267 on the ground.<B>Union 58, A-C Valley 6 — </B>Zach Traister had more than 250 all-purpose yards and scored three touchdowns for the Golden Knights (2-5). He scored on runs of 17 and 57 yards, along with an 84-yard kickoff return.Trent Corle completed all 11 of his passes for 174 yards and three TDs. Taylor Smith caught two of them and Brody Pollock one."We put a full game together tonight," Union coach Al Pryor said. "We scored our first touchdown of the year on special teams."Brennan Bliss had a tremendous game at middle linebacker. He had a couple of sacks."Michael Orrvick scored A-C Valley's lone touchdown on a 14-yard run. The Falcons (0-7) have dropped 38 straight games."They have a young staff there and people have to be patient," Pryor said. "It's rough, but they have to stay with it."
<B>Grove City 40, Corry 14 — </B>Jamarr Patterson had 17 carries for 212 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles (4-3, 2-0) in a key win over Corry (5-2, 2-1).Nick Reddick contributed 76 yards and a touchdown on 13 carries, and Brady Beech returned an interception 32 yards for a score.<B>Summit Academy 34, Deer Lakes 6</B> — Troy Vickers scored on a 91-yard run on a botched punt to lead the Knights.Vickers rambled for the score after aborting a punt attempt early in the fourth quarter from deep in his own end zone.Vickers, who rushed for a team-leading 142 yards on seven carries, also scored on a 4-yard run for Summit Academy (2-5).Deer Lakes scored first on a 97-yard fumble return by Pat Jones, but Summit's Sean McDonald responded less than a minute later with a 3-yard run that tied the score at 6.The Knights took the lead for good on the first play of the third quarter when McDonald raced 65 yards for a touchdown.McDonald rushed for 129 yards as Summit churned up 296 yards on the ground.
