Logan Martin, a graduate of Slippery Rock High School, has earned a position on the 2008 Pennsylvania High School Rodeo Team that will compete in the 60th annual National High School Finals Rodeo in the steer wrestling competition July 20-27.
Martin, last year's state steer wrestling champion, did not compete in nationals because he attended a U.S. Army basic training during the summer.
SLIPPERY ROCK — Slippery Rock University's All-America pole vaulter Jennifer Hansen was named the female winner of the 2007-08 PSACPete Nevins Scholar-Athlete of the year Award.Hansen, who owns a 4.0 GPA as an elementary education major, became a candidate by virtue of being named a recipient of a PSAC Top Ten Award in both the winter and spring sports seasons.Hansen was the national runner-up in the 2007 outdoor season, placed third in both the 2008 indoor and outdoor national meets and finished 11th in the 2006 outdoor season.
SLIPPERY ROCK — he Slippery Rock University Athletic Hall of fame's 25th anniversary induction class has been announced.Lori Way Galati (lacrosse), Jerry Skocik (football), Walter Esser (soccer/track and field), Rita Belavic Harrell (women's basketball). Blair S. Hildeebrand (football) and Bridget Sheehan (volleyball) will be recognized Sept. 20 in the Multi-Purpose Room of the University Union.The Hall of Fame board of directors will present a special award to the pioneers of Rock women's athletics:Wilma Cavill, Anne Griffiths, Martha Haverstick (posthumous), Caroline Williams, Marie Wheaton and Pat Zimmerman.A social hour will begin at 2:30 p.m., followed by dinner and an induction ceremony at 3:30 p.m. The inductees will be honored at halftime of the home football game against Kutztown (7 p.m. kickoff).
Brett Rinker of Slippery Rock fired a 79 in the boys 14 age division to place fifth at the King's Restaurants Junior Golf Tournament Friday at Highland Country Club.Rinker finished four strokes behind winner Garrett Browning of Coraopolis.
