JERUSALEM — Israel has announced it will honor the head of Pittsburgh’s Jewish community during next month’s Independence Day celebrations, six months after 11 members of the community were killed in a synagogue shooting.
Israel’s Culture Ministry said Monday it had selected Jeff Finkelstein, the president of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh, to light a torch on behalf of the Jewish Diaspora as part of the government’s May 8 Independence Day festivities. It noted Finkelstein’s work to lead “the Jewish community’s efforts to cope and rebuild” after the deadly Tree of Life attack on Oct. 28.
[naviga:h3]Bystanders rescue SUV driver in river[/naviga:h3]
PHILADELPHIA — Bystanders saved a woman from drowning after she apparently drove her SUV into the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
The Easter rescue was captured on video Sunday.
Jennifer Kelly told WCAU-TV one person jumped into the water after the vehicle accelerated and crashed into the river. Another man dove in as witnesses heard the driver banging on the window. A third man with a tire iron jumped in and the men were able to break open the rear window to get the driver out.
Police said the driver had attempted to kill herself. She was taken to a hospital for treatment.
One of the rescuers sustained minor cuts from the broken window.
[naviga:h3]Man pleads guilty in infant’s death[/naviga:h3]
PITTSBURGH — A Brighton Heights man has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter in the death of his 5-week-old daughter almost four years ago.
Allegheny County prosecutors dropped a child endangerment charge as 33-year-old Joseph Swidorsky entered the plea Monday. He will be sentenced July 16.
Swidorsky has been held in the county jail since October 2015 in the death of Braelyn Swidorsky.
A medical examiner said the child’s death was due to a skull fracture and brain hemorrhaging.
