Not good enough

Seneca Valley's Chris Lewis runs back a punt Friday in the Raiders' 27-10 loss to North Hills.
SV coach sees positives, but they can't stop North Hills

WEST VIEW — Seneca Valley coach Ron Butschle saw some good things out of his team Friday night.

But, as the Raiders are accustomed to when it comes to conference play, it wasn't enough.

North Hills put up three touchdowns in the second quarter for a 20-3 halftime lead on its way to a 27-10 Northern Five Conference win at Martorelli Stadium.

The loss overshadowed several positives for Seneca Valley.

• The Raiders' defense held North Hills star tailback Michael Rainey-Wiles to just 28 yards on six runs and three receptions.

• Junior punter Ryan Scheller totaled 93 yards on two first-half punts, both of which pinned the Indians inside their own 6-yard line.

• The Raiders (3-3, 0-2) put together a 17-play touchdown drive to begin the second quarter that cut North Hills' lead to 20-10.

But moral victories are of no consolation to Butschle.

"We show flashes of doing different things well," said the third-year coach. "But teams that don't know how to win make the mistakes we do."

One of those mistakes came after Scheller boomed a 53-yard punt that died at the Indians 1-yard line late in the first quarter.

Before North Hills (4-2, 1-1) ran a play, SV was penalized five yards for encroachment, giving the Indians valuable breathing room.

Two plays later, on the first play of the second quarter, North Hills quarterback Andy Heck kept the ball and rushed over left tackle and was gone for an 88-yard touchdown that put the Indians up 7-0.

After a 27-yard field goal by SV's Ryan Zipf cut the hosts' lead to 7-3, North Hills drove 70 yards in six plays as Heck scored on a 1-yard sneak.

The catalyst on the drive was senior quarterback Andrew Wyzkoski, who completed two passes for 47 yards on the scoring march before being relieved by Heck.

"We aren't that talented, so we need a lot of players to step up and make plays," said North Hills coach Jack McCurry.

"Both of our quarterbacks came in and gave us a big lift," he added. "(Wyzkoski) did a nice job of getting the passing game going."

If falling behind 14-3 wasn't bad enough, the Raiders' final drive of the half yielded just three yards on three plays and the Indians got the ball at SV's 37-yard line with 24 seconds left.

Wyzkoski's arm again spelled doom for the Raiders when he connected with R.J. Miller for 16 yards.

On the very next play, Matt Timko hauled in a 21-yard scoring pass with just five seconds remaining.

The extra point was no good, but North Hills walked to the locker room with a 17-point lead.

"We thought that was very big," said McCurry. "We had some timeouts that we called and stopped (SV's) drive to get the ball back. Anytime you can score with just five seconds left in the first half, that's very big."

SV's James Daniels kept his streak of scoring at least one touchdown in every game alive with a nine-yard run that capped the Raiders' first drive of the second half. Scheller's extra-point made it 20-10 with 4:17 left in the third quarter.

"Our offense did what we asked it to do, get some first downs and score," said Butschle. "And at 20-10, it's still a game at that point."

It was still a game, but the Raiders wouldn't cross midfield again until the final minute of play.

Timko added a 5-yard run for the Indians to end the scoring with 5:11 left in the game.

Notes: Daniels finished the night with 83 yards on 29 carries for the Raiders after having just 25 yards on 13 carries at halftime. ... SV quarterback Ted Pynos completed eight of 21 passes for 98 yards and two interceptions. ... Junior defensive back Aaron Palmieri intercepted a Wyzkoski pass that halted an Indians drive with 1:20 left in the second quarter.
