Wildcats dominate 'Jackets

KITTANNING — On paper, Friday night's football showdown between Freeport and Kittanning looked even.

Too bad for Freeport the games aren't played on paper.

Kittanning dominated the Yellowjackets on both sides of the ball and cruised to a 34-14 win.

The Wildcats put up 302 yards of total offense, as the backfield of Derek Taylor, Ryan Shepard and Bobby Meeks combined for 224 yards on the ground.

"That is the idea of the Wing-T offense," said Kittanning coach Sam Panchik. "We like to get all three backs involved."

The Kittanning defense held Freeport scoreless until a little more than two minutes were left in the game.

"The kids stepped up when they had to," said Panchik. "(Freeport) had the ball deep in our territory I don't know how many times, and the kids stepped up every time."

Kittanning opened the scoring with 3:29 left in the first quarter when Taylor slashed his way into the end zone from the 2-yard line to cap a 66-yard, 12-play drive.

Freeport tried to answer on the ensuing drive, but turned the ball over on downs at the Kittanning 23-yard line.

Freeport got a second chance two plays later when Sean Jack recovered a Wildcats fumble at the 19-yard line.

However, Freeport fumbled the ball right back four plays later to extinguish the opportunity.

Kittanning added another score with 5:39 left in the first half when Shepard took a pitch and rumbled 17 yards for the touchdown.

Shepard, the 6-foot, 215 pound senior, had 64 yards rushing on 12 carries.

Freeport tried to mount a drive before the end of the half to cut into Kittanning's 21-point advantage, but Brian Zimmerman's third-down pass was intercepted by Lucas Sasala and returned 40 yards for a touchdown.

Zimmerman completed six passes for 70 yards, but was intercepted three times.

With 39 seconds to go before halftime, Kittanning added another score when Brian McKelvey found a wide-open Taylor for a 26-yard scoring strike that increased the Wildcat lead to 27-0 at intermission.

McKelvey completed two of three passes for 58 yards and one interception.

Freeport was able to get on the scoreboard when Cameron Betush found his way into the end zone from six yards away with 2:33 left in the game.

Betush had 121 yards on 10 carries and two scores.

Brady Sherrieb, who ran for 192 yards last week, rushed for only 26 yards on 12 carries this week.

"They outplayed us on both sides of the ball," said Freeport coach Bill Dillen. "It's just that simple.

"We've got to get ready for next week. This is done."
