BlueSox continue to slide
Butler BlueSox manager Anthony Rebyanski was hoping his team could find a way out of its offensive slump Sunday.
He’ll have to wait at least one more night.
Butler did not collect its first hit until a Brian Lares’ infield single in the bottom of the seventh inning in a 4-1 Prospect League baseball loss to the Terre Haute Rex at Pullman Park.
In their three games since the All-Star break, the BlueSox have tallied a combined three runs on 14 hits.
Included was a 1-0 loss at Chillicothe Saturday night in which Butler managed just two base knocks.
Sunday’s defeat featured just four hits.
“I think a lot of it is our guys have one bad at-bat and they get frustrated,” said Rebyanski. “A lot of them have never struggled at baseball. I told them that you have to accept failure and look beyond it.”
Despite the scarce offense, Butler (3-6 in second half) had a chance late.
Trailing by three runs in the bottom of the ninth, Taylor Juran walked with two outs and Jason Radwan reached on an infield single.
But Chris Bossenbery struck out John Crummy to end the threat and the game.
Bossenbery recorded the last four outs for the save.
Terre Haute starting pitcher Conner Fisk did not allow a hit in the six innings he pitched. He struck out six and walked four on 102 pitches.
The right-hander attends Wabash Valley College in Illinois.
“His pitch count was a little high, but if it was up to me, I would have left him in,” said Rex manager Brian Dorsett. “But a lot of the college coaches don’t want their guys throwing too much over the summer and I have to respect that.”
Terre Haute (7-4) sent reliever Erlin Santos to the mound to start the seventh and immediately gave up the infield base hit to Lares.
Butler’s lone run came in the eighth frame. Freeport High product Ryan Siegel drilled a one-out triple to right-center and came home on Colin Harrington’s infield single two batters later.
Butler used three pitchers in the game, with Pete Slavonic starting and going the first six innings.
Two of the three runs he allowed came in the first frame thanks to a home run to left off the bat of Koby Kraemer.
Slavonic shouldered the loss after striking out five and walking three.
Kevin MacLachlan pitched two innings of relief and allowed a run in the seventh frame before Brian Thompson worked a scoreless ninth inning.
“Our pitching has been very good lately, we just haven’t had the offense to complement it,” said Rebyanski. “In baseball, you need all three — good pitching, hitting and defense.”
