James Bernard McKernan III, 68, of Mars died Saturday.

Born Aug. 15, 1939, in Pittsburgh, he was the son of the late James Bernard and Mary Sally McDonald McKernan Jr.

He was an avid collector, a NASCAR fan and he was retired from Boilermakers Local 154.

His greatest joy was seeing his family.

He is survived by four daughters, Mary Kathryn "Bunny" McKernan-Schaefers of New Sewickley Township, Megan Karen McKernan-Stockdill of Germany, Maureen Karole McKernan-Wertheimer of New Sewickley Township and Michelle Kara McKernan of North Hills; a son, James Bernard McKernan IV of Mars; his best friend, Patricia Greiner of Mars; two brothers, Sloan and Lawrence McKernan; and four sisters, Mary, Adlinda and Karen McKernan and Grace DiPlacido. He was the honored grandfather of nine grandchildren and a great-grandson. He also is lovingly remembered by many nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews, cousins and close friends.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Carol Lee Brandstatder McKernan, and a daughter, Melisa Koyne McKernan.
