Becker, Gallo win wrestling titles for Slippery Rock

Jeff Becker and Trevor Gallo each won titles as the Slippery Rock High School wrestling team placed fourth at the Section 2-AA championship tournament at Sharon High School Saturday.

Becker, a 145 pounder, beat Jason Brown of Reynolds 2-1 to place first and Gallo (171 pounds) won a 5-1 decision over Brian Feltenberger of Cochranton to earn his championship.

Slippery Rock finished the weekend with 131 points. Reynolds won the tournament with 244.5 points followed by Mercer (180) and Grove City (139).

The Rockets advanced seven wrestlers to the District 10 tournament, which will be held this weekend at Sharon High School.

Corey Scheibel (103) placed second for the Rockets, Peter Didik (112) and Patrick Kearney (215) third, and Jeff Kline (130) and Chris Barron (160) placed fourth to advance.

Grove City got three wrestlers in the finals, but all lost.

Robbie Miller (125) lost a 6-2 decision to Steve Nestor of Reynolds and Beau Fisher (140) and Danny Wise (160) also lost decisions.

Alec Miller (135) placed third, Paul Johnson (119), Craig Johnson (130) and Kent Uber (heavyweight) fourth and Jerry Giebner (152) fifth to advance for the Eagles.

The Knoch boys 200 freestyle relay team set a school record with a time of 1 minute, 36.92 seconds at the Last Ditch Meet held at North Allegheny High School Saturday.Joe Wagner, Brad Troutman, Mike McCoy and Doug Vogus bested the mark of 1:39.27.Vogus qualified for the WPIAL meet in the 200 individual medley with a time of 2:21.13.Wagner broke his own record in the backstroke with a mark of 59.25 and will compete in four events at the WPIAL meet.Troutman will also compete in four events.Saturday's meet was the last chance for swimmers to qualify for the WPIAL meet.
