Becker rebounds to take third at states

Slippery Rock High School senior wrestler Jeff Becker was stripped of his undefeated record.

But his place in the program's history is set in stone.

Becker's dreams of a Class AA 145-pound state title were dashed when he lost a 4-3 semifinal decision at the Giant Center in Hershey Friday to Mount Pleasant's Donnie Ament, the eventual state champion.

There was still a third-place finish to fight for and Becker (30-1) grabbed it with a 9-4 win over Andy Josuweit from Lake-Lehman High School Saturday.

"You can imagine how disappointed he was after losing in the semis," Rockets' coach Fred Powell said of Becker. "He was devastated by it, but was still able to come back and wrestled very well for third place. He wrestled like a champion."

It marked the second straight season in which Becker finished third. He ends his scholastic career with a mark of 131-13.

Becker and teammate Trevor Gallo (171 pounds), who also finished third in the state, both won section, district and regional titles this season.

"We'd never had any wrestler do all of that in one season," said Powell. "…and we had two kids do it this year. It's quite an accomplishment."

Gallo fell in the quarterfinal round to Schuylkill Valley's Patrick Walsh, 5-3.

The senior fought his way to the third-place consolation match Saturday and, standing opposite of him was, who else? - Patrick Walsh.

Gallo (33-2) wasn't about to let Walsh get the better of him a second time as the former scored a 4-1 decision.

"The second match wasn't even that close," said Powell of Gallo's rematch. "(Gallo) gave up a point at the end."

Gallo, who finished sixth in the state last year, now owns a 111-24 career record.

"Trevor has shown fantastic advancements in the last two years," said Powell.
