Slippery Rock's Basta qualifies for PIAA track meet

Slippery Rock High School hurdler Abby Basta placed third in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 16 seconds at the District 10 Track and Field Championships Saturday at Hickory.

The time was good enough to meet the qualifying standard and send the junior to the PIAA Track and Field Championships, which begin Friday in Shippensburg.

Basta will be joined at the state meet by her teammates in the 3,200-meter relay, which also finished third Saturday, but ran a time of 9 minutes, 51.92 seconds to meet the qualifying standard.

The members of that team are Janelle Hartzell, Allison Plummer, Casey McCaffrey and Robin Craig.

Basta placed sixth in the 300-meter hurdles with a time of 49.14 and was a member of the 1,600-meter relay team which placed seventh.

On the boys side, Clint Orloski placed fourth in the 800 with a time of 2:01.32. Nate Capello was sixth in the discus (130-11) and Dan Dillman finished eighth in the shot put (45-11) for the Rockets.

The Freeport softball team saw its season come to an end in a 5-1 loss to Washington Saturday in the first round of the WPIAL Class AA playoffs.No other information was available.
