Butler girls soccer team blanks Connecticut team

Kelly Hilderbrand scored both goals and Lisa Rodgers earned the shutout in goal as the Butler girls soccer team blanked Grenich Academy (Conn.) 2-0 Sunday in the Family First Tournament in Erie.

The Golden Tornado (2-0) also beat Canandaigua Academy (N.Y.) 4-0 on Saturday.

Hilderbrand scored two goals in that contest and Jamie Albert and KariLee Cowan also scored goals for Butler.

Rodgers picked up the shutout.

Karns City 8, Charleroi 2

- Brittni Grenninger scored four goals as the Gremlins routed Charleroi at the Family First Tournament Saturday afternoon.

Mt. Lebanon 2, Seneca Valley 0

- The Raiders were blanked in the consolation game of their tournament over the weekend. No other information was available.

Slippery Rock 4, Meadville 3 -

Jence Rhoads scored two goals and Kiersten Weghorst and Chelsey Fuller scored one each to lead the Rockets (2-0) at the Harbor Creek Tournament Friday.

Shana Raabe made six saves in goal for Slippery Rock.

Mars 6, Bishop Canevin 1

- The Planets opened the season with an impressive victory.

Dan Thuronyi scored four goals and Carl Terwilleger added another to lead the Karns City boys soccer team to a 5-0 blanking of Bradford Saturday afternoon.Andrew Harmon and Evan Crawford each added two assists for the Gremlins.Mars 1, Canevin 0- Adam Dilner scored a goal 61 minutes into the contest against Bishop Canevin to lead the Planets to the dramatic season-opening victory.Drew Seigel picked up the shutout in goal for Mars.Freeport 4, West Shamokin 0- Mike Woitas tallied all four goals for the Yellowjackets in a blanking of West Shamokin in the season opener for both teams.Butler 3, Highlands 0- The Golden Tornado opened the season with a first-round win in the Hempfield Tournament.No other information was available.

Quarterback Earl Zarpeles rushed for a 14-yard touchdown and also hooked up with Tyrone Nokes on an 11-yard scoring pass in the final 5:40 of the game to lead the Summit Academy football team to an 18-15 win over New Brighton Saturday afternoon.Zarpeles also tossed a 34-yard touchdown pass to Kasil Butler in the first quarter to open the scoring.Zarpeles completed 9-of-16 passes for 163 yards and Nokes caught six passes for 85 yards for the Knights (1-1).
