Falcons slip past Venango Catholic

Nate Silvis' triple in the bottom of the sixth inning drove in Ryan Austin with the eventual winning run as A-C Valley nipped Venango Catholic for a 6-5 baseball victory Friday afternoon.

The Falcons received a strong performance from starting pitcher John Sallee. Though he was tagged with a no-decision, Sallee struck out 10 batters in 4 Qe innings.

John Kaufman tallied two singles, a home run and four runs batted in for the Falcons (1-0).

In other games:

• Dan Keil smacked a two-run home run and Jesse Alfreno drove in four more runs as Grove City won a five-inning, rain-shortened game at Laurel, 11-4.

• Garth Kohlmeyer and Nick Morrow each tallied singles and Moniteau starter Josh Howland struck out two in two-plus innings as Moniteau and Keystone were tied 6-6 after five innings of play.

The game was called because of bad weather and will be resumed at a later date.

Boys VolleyballShawn Vincent tallied nine assists and Devin Koehring contributed seven kills as Butler (2-1) downed Hopewell in straight sets by scores of 27-25, 25-15 and 25-19.The Golden Tornado also prevailed in the junior varsity match, 2-0.
