SV golfers in team final
The Seneca Valley boys golf team hit the rough a few weeks ago, but judging by their performance Wednesday, their recent approach has been ideal.
Luke Martin and Matt Vogt each fired a 77 to help the Raiders grab the third and final qualifying berth at the WPIALDivision I Team Tournament semifinals at Donegal Highlands Golf Course.
John Raymus and Dave Roberts each carded an 82 and Andrew Tang an 86 to advance the team to today's final at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Smithton.
I'm so happy for these guys," said Seneca Valley coach Steve Mayes. "They responded to the challenge. It's unbelievable."
Latrobe won the semifinal with 388 points and Fox Chapel was second with 394. The Raiders edged Peters Township by one stroke for the final spot.
The Raiders opened the season strong before "we hit a dry spell," said Mayes. "I'm not sure how the kids were going to respond. We beat Butler to get to the playoffs last week.
"We had a practice round last week and I knew Fox Chapel and Peters Township had really strong teams. I didn't know about the rest, but I knew if we played well, we had a chance."
The last time the Raiders made the team finals was 1997, when it finished second.
"This team is similar to that one," said Mayes. "I don't want to jinx them, but we didn't have any one outstanding golfer.
"The top eight or nine golfers are separated by just two strokes ... We had a playoff match to see who our top six were. That's how close it was and how solid a team this is."
Knoch finished 10th in this semifinal with a score of 453. They were led by Cam Fusko (80), John Hook (85), Tom Gillespie (90), Joe Boros (98) and Kory Schorr (100).
Butler was at the other Division I semifinal at Grandview Golf Course in North Braddock and finished in eighth place out of 11 squads with a score of 419.
Upper St. Clair (364), North Allegheny (391) and Shady Side Academy (393) will join Latrobe, Fox Chapel and Seneca Valley in the final.
Grant Nagel (79), Andrew Shakely (81), Matt Maloy (85), Antonio Baroffio (86) and Collin Randall (88) were the Tornado's top five golfers.
"Upper St. Clair's golfers shot 70, 72, 73, 74 and 75," said Butler coach Hank Keller. "They won by almost 30 strokes."
In the Division II semifinals, Freeport played at Conley's Golf Course in Butler and finished in sixth place with a score of 427.
Sewickley Academy won the semifinal with 361, followed by Shenango (390) and Center (410).
Kaine Mowatt led the Yellowjackets with an 82 while Clayton Smith had an 83, Matt Giesler 85, T.J. Thompson 88 and L.J. Gaston 89.
"I told the kids if you're shooting for a score, I'd say 416, we'd be all right," said Freeport coachDave Panach. "We ended up with a 426, but the teams we were with were tough."
The other semifinal was played at Norvelt Golf Course in Mt. Pleasant. Jefferson-Morgan (409), St. Joe's (419) and Burgettstown (421) will join the other three teams, also at Cedarbrook.
